The Reading Habit…

A few weeks (months?) back I mentioned that I really want to get back into the reading habit, but for some reason I was having a hard time. Well, I’m proud to say that I’ve read 3 books over the past 2 months. This may not be a lot for many, but for me it’s pretty darn good. J I think I may be back in the habit again.

I started off reading Jan Karon’s In the Company of Others. I love Jan Karon and devoured her Mitford series. Honestly, I had a hard time getting going with this book. I made myself plug through the first 50 or so pages and then I really got into it. The old journal bits were not that interesting to me, but I enjoyed the story.

Then I read The Hunger Games. I had read that this was a good book or I never would have picked it up. The subject matter (a fight to the death) didn’t seem like something I would want to read, but really enjoyed this book! It was an easy read and I can’t wait to read the next 2 in the series. I usually get my books from the library, but I might have to buy the next book in this series because the person that checked it out is 2 months late returning it to the library!

Next I read Something Borrowed, because I saw that it was coming to theaters. I really liked this one too. Again, the subject matter is not cool (sleeping with your best friend’s fiance!), but I really liked the main character, just not what she was doing.  Maybe I like chick lit and didn’t even know it! It’s a chick flick in book form.

Now I’ve got several books on my list of books that I want to read:

Maybe this will be a summer of reading for me!

Random Updates…

My cute little snowman from my Christmas Home Tour has been decapitated. L So it goes living with a two year old.

So sad, so sad.

Speaking of said two year old, he has not asked for one of these in about 2 weeks now.

He’s talking up a storm, but his naps are rough. At least he’s sleeping well at night.

I just finished reading the Twilight saga.

I’ve been living with Bella and Edward and Jacob for so long, I’m not sure what to do now. J

The Christmas Pageant went very well on Sunday. I was a little nervous about it, but there was no reason to be. It turned out to be very sweet. D3 was a wise man this year. Our three wise men cracked me up. They did great during the performance, but during practice I did a lot of grinning and head shaking. J

 Merry Christmas Eve!

Lazy day…

We had such a wonderfully lazy day yesterday. We were all home from school (minus Dan- he still had school), and had a pajama day as D3 called it. We stayed in, I read my book most of the day, wasted some time on the internet, watched the boys play in the backyard, fed them 3 meals with some snacks- and that was about it! I can’t tell you the last time I’ve had a day like that. You really can’t plan a lazy day when you have kids- they usually have another agenda- but today, I think we all needed a rest. B even took a four hour nap! And still went to bed on time.

Not before wanting me to read all of these books, however.

Seven in all. He has now joined the ranks of his Mom, Dad, and big brother in a love for books. And I read them all, by the way. I’m such a sucker for a kid that will sit there and listen to a book.

After I read B his books, I went back to finish reading mine:

Apparently I still have a bit of a seventeen year old girl living in me, because I love this book. I zoomed through it in less than a week and I’m off today to buy the second in the series. Yes, it’s about vampires, and no I didn’t think I would like to read about vampires, but really it’s a love story.

The movie comes out next week and hopefully I can con talk Dan into seeing it over Thanksgiving break. J Maybe the word vampire will stand out to him if he reads this and not the words love story.

Have a great Wednesday!!

What we’re reading…

My Sunday Scripture verse came from a parenting book that I’m reading right now. The author really uses Ephesians 6:4 as his theme verse throughout the book. This verse really struck a chord with me. I try to be a good mommy, but it is hard work! I struggle when the kids are tantruming and its time to go somewhere- I just want to scream (and sometimes do), but I really want to get out of that mode. Maybe this book will help me with some suggestions.

I’m reading Making Children Mind without Losing Yours by Dr. Kevin Lehman.

I loved the title! So true. Dr. Lehman is a Christian author, so I really like his perspective. He is also the author of The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are. I really would like to read this book next. I’m fascinated with birth order.

So far I’m enjoying this book and I actually think I might be getting something out of it. I have tried to read several “parenting” books in the past and none of the suggestions have worked with my oldest. He’s such a sweet boy and he is pretty spirited as well. I don’t know, I’m still trying to decide if the author’s ideas are really realistic. And I’m not sure I agree with his thoughts on allowances. The jury’s still out, we shall see…

All four of us just love books. There are gobs of books around our house and we always seem to be reading something.

As for the other members of the household:

Dan:    Right now Dan is reading The New Creation: John Wesley’s Theology Today
by Theodore Runyon

He’s trying to get back into school mode since he starts back to seminary September 2nd. I’m thinking only seminary students and those really into the history of John Wesley would want to read this book, but I could be wrong. J

D3:    Right now D3 is reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling.

This child devours books. He’s becoming an excellent reader, but this is one that we are reading to him for his bedtime story. We’ve zoomed through the first two Harry Potter books with him, we’ve read him almost the entire Chronicles of Narnia series and we just finished reading Little House in the Big Woods. He’s really into chapter books and it’s so much fun to be able to read these books with him. Dan and I both loved the Harry Potter series and so far D3 does as well. I was worried about this one being a little too scary for him, but I think he will be alright with it.

Blue:    Right now Baby Blue is loving The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss.

His little choices change nearly daily, but this is the one I’ve had to read all this past weekend. He was going through a phase where he was bringing me Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? like 10 times a day. I try to always stop whatever I’m doing and read a book when the kids bring one to me, but the baby nearly made me break my rule because he wanted to read so much!
