Our Three Words…

Our week in three words:

Dan graduated from his CPE program Friday.

“Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an intensive experiential educational program for pastors and religious leaders interested in developing their clinical skills. Students engage in pastoral work and reflect on their experience with a trained supervisor and a peer group. Key areas for learning include integrating theology into pastoral practice, formation as a religious leader, and self-reflection and knowledge. CPE can be an excellent tool for discernment, self-care and renewal” (from www.advocatehealth.com).

Dan has been working at a local hospital as a chaplain for the past 3 months. He worked 8-5 and was on-call for 24 hours once a week and 24 hours once a month. This CPE program made for a very intense summer. It was both emotionally and physically exhausting. To say we’re excited that he’s made it through is an understatement!

I think he gained a lot out of the program, but is thrilled to have reached the end.

And I’m excited that he has no more on-calls!

Sore Throats and my Classroom…

Well, I last posted cute pictures of my tired Kindergartener passed out on the couch. He kept trying to wake up, but kept falling asleep.

And as I was taking his picture, look what little one was doing:

Climbing up on the kitchen chairs and stealing my drink! He’s becoming quite the climber.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand… my sleepy head. He wakes up about dinner time with 104.4 fever. L His throat started hurting and I just knew he had strep throat.

I took him to the doctor- and by the way going to the pediatrician with a 1 and a 5 year old and waiting for an hour and a half is a cruel form of punishment! Anyway, the doctor ran the strep test three times, but it came back negative. She was sure he had strep too, but nope. She did however, put him on antibiotics for whatever infection he seems to have.

So, it didn’t take D3 long to catch some sort of bug at school and miss 2 days. He went back today and seems to be doing well.

I just finished up my first week with my new group of 4 year olds. We had a really great first week. The kids really jumped right into the routine and we are doing tons more that I thought we would be this early in the year. Praise God, I think this year is going to be enjoyable. Makes me want to go knock on wood somewhere, but I will resist the urge to be superstitious.

Here’s a picture of my classroom waiting on kids to come:

Kindergarten is exhausting…

Here is my little man this afternoon when he got home from Kindergarten:

This NEVER happens. My child never just gets tired and falls asleep. He has been allergic to naps for several years now.

I guess Kindergarten is quite exhausting.

What we’re reading…

My Sunday Scripture verse came from a parenting book that I’m reading right now. The author really uses Ephesians 6:4 as his theme verse throughout the book. This verse really struck a chord with me. I try to be a good mommy, but it is hard work! I struggle when the kids are tantruming and its time to go somewhere- I just want to scream (and sometimes do), but I really want to get out of that mode. Maybe this book will help me with some suggestions.

I’m reading Making Children Mind without Losing Yours by Dr. Kevin Lehman.

I loved the title! So true. Dr. Lehman is a Christian author, so I really like his perspective. He is also the author of The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are. I really would like to read this book next. I’m fascinated with birth order.

So far I’m enjoying this book and I actually think I might be getting something out of it. I have tried to read several “parenting” books in the past and none of the suggestions have worked with my oldest. He’s such a sweet boy and he is pretty spirited as well. I don’t know, I’m still trying to decide if the author’s ideas are really realistic. And I’m not sure I agree with his thoughts on allowances. The jury’s still out, we shall see…

All four of us just love books. There are gobs of books around our house and we always seem to be reading something.

As for the other members of the household:

Dan:    Right now Dan is reading The New Creation: John Wesley’s Theology Today
by Theodore Runyon

He’s trying to get back into school mode since he starts back to seminary September 2nd. I’m thinking only seminary students and those really into the history of John Wesley would want to read this book, but I could be wrong. J

D3:    Right now D3 is reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling.

This child devours books. He’s becoming an excellent reader, but this is one that we are reading to him for his bedtime story. We’ve zoomed through the first two Harry Potter books with him, we’ve read him almost the entire Chronicles of Narnia series and we just finished reading Little House in the Big Woods. He’s really into chapter books and it’s so much fun to be able to read these books with him. Dan and I both loved the Harry Potter series and so far D3 does as well. I was worried about this one being a little too scary for him, but I think he will be alright with it.

Blue:    Right now Baby Blue is loving The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss.

His little choices change nearly daily, but this is the one I’ve had to read all this past weekend. He was going through a phase where he was bringing me Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? like 10 times a day. I try to always stop whatever I’m doing and read a book when the kids bring one to me, but the baby nearly made me break my rule because he wanted to read so much!

Sunday Scripture

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.”

~Ephesians 6:4 (New Living Translation)
